As with After Burner, it's about as good as Sega could make the translation to an 8-bit console. I'm not too impressed with this title, but then again I didn't like the original very much, either. I'd like to see the 3-D version of this game, but I've seen no hard proof of its existence.

Comments: Summer of 2002! Summer of 2002! We set up camp for a few nights and it didn't have a secure perimiter. We found a river that had lenths of tall fencing near it, so we cut it out with bolt cutters and erected a perimiter among the trees further up the hill. 12 slept whilst two kept watch. (2 hour shifts). Nobody got in, but the secure feeling was pretty comforting.

Comments: Why the fuck do people compare the SMS with arcade games? Christ SMS was like an 8 bit machine or something the arcade was who knows 64 bit. Not even fair to compare, no expected it to be like the arcade. Anyway, this game was super cool. When I finally learned that you could brake around the curves I kicked ass. Loved the different levels and scenery.

Comments: Dodgy framerate, bland scenery, crude SFX, cheesy efforts at 3d effects (particularly the phantom junction) and traffic that offer no challenge whatsoever provide very good reasons for playing Road Rash instead. I realise that the SMS was never going to produce anything seriously close to the arcade version (although Outrun 3-D is significantly closer than this), but this version disappoints even in comparison to the relatively ugly, but playable, C64 version. The C64 also produced Turbocharge, which is certainly the best 8-Bit driving game (with aggressive opponents, convincing tunnels and roadforks, and near-seamless framerate). Or you could opt for the Spectrum version of Chase HQ. To be fair, SMS Outrun has very nice music and all five end sequences reasonably well produced, but that still leaves it a pretty lacklustre experience.

I gotta admit, this game was a good translation from the arcade. Everything was intact. Even the endings. I can still hum the music \"Musical Sound Shower\" and \"Splash Wave\". Greatness at its best. A perfect 10!

Playing the arcade-true Out Run on Shenmue 2 recently (dreamcast 4 ever!) reminded me of just how revolutionary this game was when it came out.Yu Suzuki is a genius! And does anyone remember the bonus music tape that came with the Commodore 64 tape version? I\'ve still got it! Oh, the SMS version? Pretty decent. Not a world beater, but what would you expect...

It's much better than Square's Rad Racer for the NES. Out Run 3D definitely exists. I see copies of it for sale all the time. It is probably the rarest in-demand game, however, and consequently copies usually sell for $80-$120. Anyway, this game kicks ass and I give it a ten. It's a must-have!
